Hi Everyone,
We have had a member library request that their staff have access to the
batch item editing tool in Koha. This is currently not a permission in the
"General Staff" permissions group. It is only part of the "Advanced
Cataloger" or "Director" level permissions group. This tool allows staff to
modify fields like item status and location (basically any field in the
item record) for large numbers of item records at once, which can
significantly improve efficiency for collection maintenance projects.
Before we make this change, we would like your input on how to best manage
the permissions. Because this affects the entire consortium, we are
considering two implementation options:
Option 2: Create a New Group that includes Batch Item Editing. Create
a separate permission group (slotted between "General Staff" and "Advanced
Cataloger"). This would allow each director to decide individually which of
their staff members should have this access by changing their assigned
permission group.
While the primary benefit of this tool is efficiency and time savings, it
is important to note the potential drawback.. Because this feature allows
for major changes to large numbers of item records at once, any mistakes
that are not caught quickly can be difficult to reverse and may require
significant manual work to correct each individual record as they are
identified. Please note that staff would only have the ability to batch
edit their own home library's item records; they would not be able to
modify the records of any other library in the consortium.
Please let us know which of these two methods your library would prefer. We
want to ensure we choose a path that balances efficiency with the level of
control each director needs over their own staff's permissions.
Once we gathered a bit of input from all of you, we will move forward with
the implementation and notify everyone when changes to the permissions
group(s) have been made.
Thank you for your feedback!

We're also happy to keep that in the realm of cataloger/director, but option two is what we'd pick if we need another category.
