New record conundrum

Hey everyone,

I have recently come across two books that are causing me problems. They
are the same book, Love’s Journey Home by Julie Coulter Bellon, with the
same copyright, ISBN, and publishers, with no edition statements. However,
the difference in page numbers is 234 vs 209. This is more than OCLC’s
recommended 3 page difference, but I am struggling with defending creating
a whole new record for only that difference. Does anyone have any advice or
directions on how I should proceed?

I would go ahead and utilize the record. Page number differences is not enough reason to create a new record in my opinion.

Hi India-Bleu,

Do you have the books in-hand, and if so, have you examined the content and is it substantially different? I would be inclined to create a new record with such a large discrepancy; however, I’m coming from a special collections standpoint. I would spot-check and compare the contents before making a decision. Otherwise, I would add a 500 note indicating the variation or a local note for your copies.

Good luck!

Hi Linda and Ashley,

Thank you for your input! We have paged through the two copies of the book,
and other than things appearing on different pages they appeared to be the
exact same. We have a feeling it is due to the margins, as they are
noticeably different from one copy to another.

Ashley, I love your idea of a 500 note. Given that it appears to be the
same exact content, I feel like that would help assuage my cataloger heart.

Warmly,
India
