Hello!
I am very curious to hear whether other libraries are using book presses
for water-damaged books. We have been looking for a book press replacement
and it is very hard to find one that is heavy-duty enough for library use
without breaking the bank. I found a replacement of one of ours on ebay and
it looks like they still make similar ones in Australia, but they won't
ship to the US. So I had to wonder if other libraries are even doing this
anymore, or just replacing water-damaged items. Please let me know!

We just discard liquid damaged items and replace if we still want them for the collection. We decided that you don’t always know what liquid it was. And there’s too much potential for mold or other things to grow.

We're financially in a position where we can discard most water-damaged
items and replace them (or request them through ILL) if needed.
That said, we do have a two presses that are still functional; I don't know
when they were purchased and from whom, or if they were custom-made for our
library by another county department. They do seem to be antique. It is
quite rare that they see much use these days, but once in a blue moon...

That is so interesting! We press out water damaged items about once a
week. I talked to one of the people on our repairs team and this is what
she told me:
Before she and Joana became the processing and repairs team, there were
often lots of water-damaged books waiting to be pressed out. Now, most of
the time they can get all of the week's water-damaged books into the press.
She feels like it's worth it to press out water damage. She thinks only
about a quarter of them don't work, and some of those do work after
pressing them out a second time. She says that most of the time when they
do a damage label, it is for water damage, but not all water damage repairs
end up needing a damage label - she guesses maybe half do. She says some of
them press out really well and you can barely tell there was any water
damage because there also aren't stains. She says even the ones that don't
work as well still are improved. She also feels confident that they're
water damage and not some other mysterious liquid, because those will end
up with stains and/or make the pages sticky. She says that a lot of the
ones that don't work were done with the bad press, so they'll do it again
with the other press and they're good to go after that.

I believe they let the item dry out if they're still wet, then they very
lightly spray the pages with water and put them in the press. They leave
the items in the press for a week.

We use ours regularly, but it's so old that we have no idea where it came from. Gaylord Archival sells one, but ours is different, so I'm not sure what the quality is like.

Subject: [Technicalservices] Book presses for water damage
Hello!
I am very curious to hear whether other libraries are using book presses for water-damaged books. We have been looking for a book press replacement and it is very hard to find one that is heavy-duty enough for library use without breaking the bank. I found a replacement of one of ours on ebay and it looks like they still make similar ones in Australia, but they won't ship to the US. So I had to wonder if other libraries are even doing this anymore, or just replacing water-damaged items. Please let me know!

Ours are actually both Gaylord book presses. Gaylord Archival sells a new
crank, but not the full book press. The one we have like that works better
than the other, so we could just buy a new crank, but the poll on the base
is also bent out of shape. So we're trying to see if we can put a new,
straight poll in, and buy a new crank to go with it.

I believe they let the item dry out if they're still wet, then they very
lightly spray the pages with water and put them in the press. They leave
the items in the press for a week.
